Who we are
Since 1967, the Governor's Commission for Women has served as a liaison between Texas women and government agencies, as well as private entities addressing women's needs. We help women identify information and services best suited to their needs, as well as find solutions to emerging issues facing women. The commission works with many partners to ensure best practices for streamlining services and avoiding public-private duplication.
Texas women with varied interests, backgrounds and expertise are appointed to the commission for two-year terms to bring fresh perspectives and ideas. Each term, the commission targets new challenges facing Texas women in addition to the commission's on-going programs and referral services.
In the past decade, the commission
- distributed dating violence prevention toolkits to more than 1700 Texas public high schools.
- worked with the AARP Foundation to facilitate a pilot employment project for mature women in the Rio Grande Valley.
- provided nutrition planning information at events around the state.
- established a permanent, interactive exhibit honoring Texas Women's Hall of Fame recipients.
- raised and donated more than $500,000 to various programs supporting women's concerns.
