Who we are

"Any committee is only as good as the most knowledgeable, determined and vigorous person on it. There must be somebody who provides the flame."
- Lady Bird Johnson,
former U.S. First Lady & 1984 Texas Women's Hall of Fame honoree

Established in 1967 by then-Texas Governor John Connally, the Governor's Commission for Women has been serving as a connection between Texas women and their state government for over three decades.

The Commission's mission is to promote opportunities for Texas women through:

  • outreach - being present and active in community efforts and events;
  • education - helping women learn more about the issues affecting them;
  • research - discovering and digging deeper into key issues for Texas women; and
  • referral services - helping connect Texas women with the information and resources they need to thrive.
We are pleased to announce the release of a new and improved identity brochure for the Commission. The brochure outlines the Commission's purpose, the issues we're currently focused on, and what we're doing to protect, promote, encourage and honor Texas women. Download a copy of the brochure here: 2006 Brochure [2MB PDF]. As the cover says, We Are Texas Women - and we're looking better than ever!
