  • Juvenile Justice – Texas Youth Commission

Governor Perry created the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board on November 30, 2001 in Executive Order RP 9 to discuss issues of juvenile justice policy and guidelines for juvenile justice grant funding for the State of Texas.

When allegations of criminal activity within the Texas Youth Commission (TYC) came to light, Gov. Perry acted quickly to correct the deficiencies in the state’s juvenile corrections center. This launched an enduring period of reforms that are taking place to ensure all youth in the agency’s care receive proper services and treatment.

  • Law Enforcement

From the remotest West Texas desert land to America’s fourth-largest city, Houston, the security of Texas citizens continues to be a top priority for Governor Perry.  The governor has been a vocal advocate of Texas peace officers, who protect our families, our state and our way of life by responding to emergencies, investigating crimes and being involved in their own communities.
Governor Perry has brought together law enforcement entities at the local, county, state and federal levels.  These agencies are now sharing information, personnel and resources to target and suppress crime in each area.

  • One Star

In 2003, Gov. Perry created a unique entity for a unique task – “The OneStar Foundation, Inc., a Texas non-profit corporation with the purpose of ‘furthering volunteerism and community service in the State of Texas’.” In Executive Order RP-30, Gov. Perry relocated the duties of the Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, Governor’s Mentoring Initiative, Governor’s Volunteer Leadership Conference and Governor’s Volunteer Awards into the OneStar Foundation, also incorporating a new emphasis on faith-based initiatives as a natural partner to the traditional community-based volunteerism.  Since its creation, OneStar’s mission has expanded to focus on stimulating organizational excellence, social innovation and investment in Texas’ social sector to increase practical solutions to root causes of problems.

  • School Safety

Governor Perry recognizes that children cannot learn and teachers cannot teach if their attention is distracted by concerns about their personal safety.  That is why he has worked diligently to make our schools safer for teachers, administrators, parents and students.  Among other measures, the governor has supported and signed legislation requiring school districts to prohibit bullying and to provide background checks on all school employees, and also establishing a School Safety Center at Texas State University-San Marcos.
Thanks to Governor Perry’s dedication, Texas schools have more tools and resources available than ever before to ensure that campuses are safe.
