Colonia Roads Project
Governor Perry advocated for the passage of legislation providing for the financing and construction of colonia access roads. These roads are desperately needed to bring essential services such as school buses, emergency vehicles and postal vehicles to some of the poorest Texas communities where roads become treacherous after a downpour. (SB 1296, 77th Session, Proposition 2, Passed by Texas voters, 60% In Favor, 40% Against, November 6, 2001)
The funds will pay for roadway improvements connecting colonias to other public roads. The improvements include paving dirt roads, re-paving deteriorating roads, and constructing drainage structures.
The projects competed against other colonia road projects previously submitted for funding. Project evaluation was based on the border colonia population, condition of existing roads, whether a project was on an existing or planned school bus route and access to other parts of the region.
