Gov. Perry Signs HB 873 to Provide Incentives for Entertainment Industries
Apr 23, 2009 - Gov. Rick Perry today signed House Bill (HB) 873 by Rep. Dawnna Dukes and Sen. Robert Deuell, which promotes the entertainment industry in Texas by providing incentives for the film, television, video and digital interactive media production industries. "The passage of House Bill 873 is an important step in helping Texas regain its footing in the moving image business," Gov. Perry said. "With this legislation, we are strengthening our state's investment in a vital industry that not only shows off our state to the rest of the world, but also draws investment and creates jobs for Texans." From the silent World War I epic "Wings" - the first film ever to win the Academy Award for Best Picture - to the long-running "Austin City Limits" concert series, Texas has been the birthplace of an incredibly wide-ranging selection of movies and television shows. Many classics and soon-to-be-classics, including "Giant," "Terms of Endearment," "Bonnie and Clyde," "There Will Be Blood" and "No Country for Old Men," were made here; so were cult favorites "Dazed and Confused," "Waiting for Guffman" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." Rick Perry today reiterated his request that the Texas Legislature allocate $60 million to fund the Texas Film Incentive Program in order to cultivate the state's entertainment industry to attract investment and create jobs for Texans. "The entertainment industry is an essential part of Texas' economy, bringing in more than $1.2 billion over the past ten years, but those numbers are declining," Gov. Perry said.
