Employment & Economic Development
The Facts | Own Your Own | Other Resources
At one end of the economic spectrum, women are the buyers. American women are the U.S. economy's #1 purchasing agents, spending $7 trillion annually.
At the other end of the economic spectrum, women are becoming the sellers. In Texas, more than 790,000 privately held businesses are owned by women. These companies make up almost half of all privately held firms statewide, and are growing almost twice as fast as all privately held firms.
Promoting the essential role women play in the workforce and in the marketplace is a key priority for the Governor's Commission for Women. The Commission is working to help Texas women succeed with whatever professional path they choose.
You can help yourself, too:
- Get informed - Stay on top of workplace issues and trends. Subscribe to a magazine or newsletter aimed at working women, or find an informational website you can tap into regularly.
- Get involved - Join a few women's professional organizations relevant to your field. They're terrific sources of news, advocacy, networking and support.
- Give - Become a mentor - either formally through an organization, or informally just between the two of you - for a graduate-to-be or someone considering a change of careers.
