The 78th Legislature passed Senate Bill 652 creating the office of the Texas Military Preparedness Commission (TMPC) under the Governor's Office. The TMPC will contain thirteen members appointed by Governor Perry, with appropriate staff. The TMPC's mission is to preserve and expand Texas' military installations and their missions and assist communities that have been impacted by a Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) action. The staff and Commissioners are committed to ensuring the State's leadership role in defense related issues.
The military has always been a driving force in Texas' diverse economy. In 2005, the total Department of Defense military expenditures in Texas were $31.8 billion creating an economic impact of over $75 billion. Texas also enjoys a rich military history, with historic active installations like Fort Sam Houston, Fort Bliss, Randolph Air Force Base, and Naval Air Station Corpus Christi.
The goal of the Office of the TMPC is to offer assistance to defense communities, military installations and defense related businesses. Because the military is such an important part of our heritage, Texans provide recommendations to the State and Federal legislature. These recommendations and other base information can be found in the Annual Master Plan which is developed and published by the Office of the TMPC. The Plan also contains strategies to assist defense communities to work in concert with installation officials to attract and retain military missions.
Communities that have been impacted by BRAC may be assisted through The Defense Economic Adjustment Assistance Grant Program or the Texas Military Value Revolving Loan Fund.
The TMPC is statutorily required to hold Quarterly Meetings
The next TMPC quarterly meeting will be held on Thursday, May 22nd at 9:00 a.m. in Room E1.028 of the Capitol Extension in Austin.
