Since August 1993, Simon Vega has held the annual
Elvis Festival. Simon now with the assistance of the Los Fresnos Area Chamber
of Commerce and the City of Los Fresnos holds two annual festivals, one in August
for the memorial of Elvis and a Party in January for the Kings Birthday. The festivities
include: Live music, food and beverages, look a like contest, sing a like contest,
car shows, trivia questions, museum tours and fun for the family. The Highlight
of the festivities is the World Class impersonators that come from all around
to perform the Elvis hits on stage which give the festival its proud tradition
of celebration. Simon Vega joined the U.S. Army on February 6th back in 1958.
Simon reported to Fort Carson, Colorado to complete a four day induction into
the military. From Colorado he was sent to Fort Hood, Texas and took basic training
for four weeks. During that same period of time, Elvis had arrived from his induction
from Arkansas. It was at Fort Hood where, Simon introduced his wife, Theresa Vega,
to Elvis for a photo opportunity. Theresa recalls that Elvis was nervous while
he placed his arm around her for the picture. After the picture was taken, Elvis
responded "gracias." The photo of Elvis and Theresa can be seen in the Little
Graceland Museum. Although Simon had met Elvis around the barracks at Fort Hood,
it wasn't until they got shipped off to Germany where Simon finally got to get
the opportunity to know Elvis. In late August of 1958 when they arrived in Freidburg,
Germany, both men were assigned to Company D Spearhead 3rd Army Division. It was
in the "chow" line that Simon approached Elvis and reintroduced himself. From
that day on, Vega and Presley became "army buddies." The two friends shared guard
duty and other details. Elvis just wanted to be treated as an equal to his fellow
soldiers; no better, no worse.

What is Pickin' in the Pines? If you ask
a musician that question, they will tell you it's "An Acoustic Jam Fest". This
is the musically correct explanation. Music fans that attend year in and year
out will tell you it's even more then that. It could also be called "Pickin',
Campin', Vistin', Barbecuin', Story Swappin', Relaxin', Sippin', Strollin', and
Listenin' in the Pines. It's a weekend event, so most folks arrive with tents
or self-contained camper trailer and it's BYOB. Guitar, flute, banjo, harmonica,
fiddle, and mandolin are just a few of the instruments to enjoy and sing along
with. Bring your own instrument of choice or just come and be a fan. Greenhorn
campers enjoy a hot water shower and restroom for the guys and gals. If you can't
camp out, you're still welcome to "come and go" just for Friday and/or Saturday
night concerts if that is your preference.

The
citrus industry in the Rio Grande Valley was still young when Paul Ord and the
Young Men's Business League introduced the first Texas Citrus Fiesta in Mission,
in December 1932. They saw the celebration as a way to spread the word about the
bountiful winter harvest of grapefruits and oranges from the lush subtropical
Rio Grande Valley. The Theme of that First fiesta, held outdoors against the background
of the citrus bearing trees, was "Coronation and Pageant of Citrus." John H. Shary,
considered the Father of the Texas Citrus Industry, reigned over the one-day celebration.
It started with a half-hour concert and ended with the coronation of King Citrus
and Queen Citrianna. This became a tradition of "royalty," with a citrus industry
leader chosen as King and a Queen chosen from Rio Grande Valley "Duchesses," each
representing a community and its product or industry. The second Fiesta did not
take place until 1934 because of damage caused by a hurricane in 1933. Other than
during World War II, the fiesta has been held annually. In the 1930s, Fox Movietone
News enjoyed showing the Valley's lovely ladies in bathing suits in a swimming
pool full of floating grapefruits while the rest of the nation was in a deep freeze.
The fiesta still takes delight in showing off the lovely ladies and handsome lads
at the Coronation of King Citrus and Queen Citrianna. Coronation is now held indoors
amidst the flourish of herald trumpets during the last week of January. Since
1932, the Fiesta has presented its Product Costume Style Show where exquisite
costumes made of citrus and other local Valley products are exhibited. Through
the years, and with modern technology, the costumes have become intricate works
of fold art using Valley citrus, fruits, vegetables and foliage that have been
pulverized, dehydrated, blended and micro-waved. These costumes have been featured
in National Geographic, Southern Living, Texas Monthly magazines, and at shows
from Kansas City to Washington D.C.
