Richland College of the Dallas County Community College District offers both credit and non-credit courses in music. Richland now offers a fully-transferrable Field of Study Associates Degree in Music. Our Dallas-based music faculty consists of working performers, educators, and scholars who hold advanced degrees from some of the top music schools and conservatories in the nation. Our low teacher to student ratio means plenty of individual attention, and you will never have a class, ensemble, or private lesson taught by a student assistant. Our facilities include rehearsal and practice rooms, a MIDI lab, a digital piano/music software lab, a percussion lab, and a listening lab. With in-district tuition at $36 per credit hour and no additional instructional or lab fees, a 60-hour Associate's degree costs less than a single 12 hour semester load at most public 4-year Texas universities. The Music Program at Kingwood College has two primary functions, depending on our students needs: First, it is designed to prepare students to earn an Associate of Arts degree and transfer to a university. For these transfer students (whether or not they are music majors), we offer core courses such as music fundamentals, theory and sight singing/ear training, and music appreciation. In addition, for the beginning student, we also offer class voice and class piano. For more advanced students, we offer instruction in applied voice, piano, violin, viola and guitar. Students in private and class lessons perform in a recital at the end of each semester. Our two vocal ensembles (Chamber Singers and Kingwood Chorale) perform at least twice each semester. Second, there is a community education track which encourages local citizens to participate in our music classes and our performing ensembles, enhancing the skills of the students and the culture of the community. Performance opportunities include: Chamber Singers (Todd Miller), Jazz Ensemble, Kingwood Chorale (Todd Miller), and Opera Workship (Todd Miller), Kingwood Pops Orchestra (Gary Leibst 281-618-5696), Big Band (James Stubbs (281) 312-1730), Concert Band (James Stubbs (281) 312-1730). Performance spaces include the theater (250 seats) and the recital hall (125 seats). Jan Schultz (281) 312-1532 is the events coordinator.

Central Texas Orff is based in San Antonio, and hosts four professional development workshops per year for elementary music educators in collaboration with the Texas Music Educators Association, and local school districts. In addition, Orff Schulwerk levels courses lasting two weeks are offered each summer at the campus of Trinity University. CTO is a chapter of the national organization, American Orff-Schulwerk Association...Orff Schulwerk is a way to teach and learn music. It is based on things children like to do: sing, chant rhymes, clap, dance, and keep a beat on anything near at hand. These instincts are directed into learning music by hearing and making music first, then reading and writing it later. This is the same way we all learned our language...Orff Schulwerk happens in a non-competitive atmosphere where one of the rewards is the pleasure of making good music with others. When the children want to write down what they have composed, reading and writing find their moment. ..Orff Schulwerk uses poems, rhymes, games, songs, and dances as examples and basic materials. These may be traditional or original. Spoken or sung, they may be accompanied by clapping and stamping or by drums, sticks, and bells. ..With Orff Schulwerk, improvisation and composition start students on a lifetime of knowledge and pleasure through personal musical experience. Learning is meaningful only if it brings satisfaction to the learner, and satisfaction arises from the ability to use acquired knowledge for the purpose of creating. For both teacher and student, Orff Schulwerk is a theme with endless variation.
