The
University of Texas at Brownsville offers a minor in music, an associate's degree
in music and a bachelor's degree. A wide array of ensembles and performance opportunities
are available including: Mariachi Escorpión, Bravo Opera Company, wind ensemble,
an award winning jazz band, choral, Ensemble Guitarra, vocal ensemble, and a variety
of chamber music opportunities. The guitar program is one of the strongest in
Texas under the direction of Dr. Michael Quantz. The UTB music faculty includes
two pianists of international renown: Francisco Rocafuerte and Richard Urbis.
The jazz band program is one of the strongest in Texas with many awards and under
the leadership of Terry Tomlin. The UTB faculty chamber music ensembles include
the Border Brass (a brass quintet) and Trio Escorpio. The department also has
a concert series Patron of the Arts, the finest in internationally and nationally
recognized artists and chamber groups. Performance opportunities include the Jazz
Ensemble (Terry Tomlin, Director),Women's Choir (Antonio Briseño, Director), Concert
Band (Allen Clark, Director), Bravo Opera Co. (Amy Brownlow, Director), Mariachi
Escorpión (Antonio Briseno, Director), Ensemble Guitar (Michael Quantz, Director)
Jazz Guitar Ensemble (Abe Sanchez, Director) Percussion Ensemble (Scott Simmons,
Director) Flute Choir (Celeste Morales, Director) Chorale (Joe Bersalona, Director)
Chamber Music (Dr. Carol McNabb, Director) and Orchestra (Mike Stone, Director).
