Launched in 2003, Star Wars Galaxies is an online game from Sony Online Entertainment’s Austin studio and LucasArts. Players create their own characters from among 9 iconic Star Wars professions including Jedi, bounty hunter, smuggler, trader and others. Players can then explore the galaxy and adventure across 12 different planets and 8 unique space sectors. This massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) allows users to choose their allegiance for either the Empire or the Rebellion, or freelance their services throughout the galaxy. Participants experience space combat Star Wars-style as they pilot their own X-wing or custom modified Millennium Falcon. The Austin studio of Sony Online Entertainment was formed in 2000 specifically
to develop Star Wars Galaxies. Since then, they have worked on
various other SOE products and have become a major player in the Texas
game community. More recently, they have begun production on a new massively
multiplayer game for the PC and the PLAYSTATION® 3 based in the DC
Comic universe.
