Houston 48 Hour Film Project - Call for Entries

The 48 Hour Film Project is an exciting fast paced independent filmmaking competition which encourages filmmakers to get out there and make a film rather than talk about making a film. In cities around the world, teams of filmmakers race the clock to make a film in a single weekend. All creative activity - writing, filming, editing, etc - must all be done within this time frame. At the start of the competition, teams draw a genre and are assigned a character, prop and line of dialogue that must appear in the film - after that it's up to them.

This year the 48HFP visits Houston the weekend of June 6 - 8. All entries will be screened at River Oaks Theatre on June 11 & 12. Registration opens April 14. There is limited space, so be sure to sign up early.

Visit www.48hourfilm.com/houston for more information.

Submission Deadline: June 1, 2008

In 2006, Josiah Miles Neundorf, a talented media artist from San Antonio, Texas, passed away as a result of Osteosarcoma, a cancer of the bone. In his short twenty years with us, Josiah expanded the lives of those who knew him through his brilliance, his joy and his prolific creation of outstanding works of art in the midst of the pain and physical ravages from this disease.

In honor of this artist, who only wanted to share his wonderment with the world around us, his parents, Marcus and Nancy Neundorf with the URBAN-15 Group have created the Josiah Media Festival, an annual event designed to showcase outstanding works by young film, video and media artists.

2008 marks the second year of this festival. The three-day event will take place at the URBAN-15 Studio in San Antonio, Texas on July 10, 11, and 12, 2008. In addition to screenings, there will be student filmmaking workshops run by industry professionals.

Young media makers born after June 1, 1987 are invited to submit works completed within two years of the June 1, 2007 entry deadline. There will be a $5 entry fee for each film. A selection process juried by professionals from the field will choose works in narrative, documentary and experimental genres created in Super 8mm film, 16mm film, video, mobile media and web-based formats, including all types of animation. Works must be submitted on DVD. A grand prize of a $500 line of credit with B & H Photo & Video will be awarded, as well as additional prizes for various categories. Last year over a thousand dollars in prize money was award to young filmmakers.

SWAMP Launches New Emerging Filmmakers Fellowship Program - Call for Entries

For 31 years, the Southwest Alternate Media Project (SWAMP) has promoted the creation of film, video and new media. With a desire to help emerging Texas film and video makers to develop their craft, SWAMP has inaugurated the Emerging Filmmakers Fellowship Program. For 2008, the theme will be: Migration (as a process of social, geographical, and cultural displacement). A blue- ribbon panel of film/video professionals will choose 5 to 7 filmmakers to be a part of the fellowship program. The selected artists will be chosen on the strength of their proposal and on the promise of the artist's future. The panel will also work to ensure that the fellowship pool mirrors the diversity of Texas, in keeping with SWAMP's mission to encourage production of media that reflects a multicultural community. Each artist will receive a small amount of funds for production costs, ranging from $3,000 to $5,000. For more information and to download an application, go to www.swamp.org.
