Local Committee Guide

This guide provides a tool for communities interested in developing a local committee on people with disabilities. Basic information for development is provided and local committees are encouraged to adapt the information to fit specific community needs and interests.

The Governor's Committee serves as a resource for developing committees and continues to strengthen the local committee network by focusing on areas of mutual interest. The Local Committee Guide provides information about the history of committees, steps to establishing a local committee, examples of successful committees, other resources that can be used in the implementation of a local committee. The Local Committee Guide offers information about programs implemented by Governor's committee: Barbara Jordan Media Awards, Employment Awards, Access for All Decal, scholarship programs, and the Scoop on Reporting about People with Disabilities.

Local committees have the opportunity to network with other local committees across Texas, interact with local business leaders, and provide input to the Governor's Committee regarding recommendations for the Governor and Legislature in the areas of: access, education, health, housing, recreation, transportation and workforce. Local committee reports are provided to the Governor's Committee at quarterly meetings; as a clearinghouse, the Committee shares both similar and unique information about local committees. The guide is designed to offer information on a variety of organizing structures and programming ideas.

The Governor's Committee would like to thank all the local committees. The staff of the Governor's Committee would also like to thank the following individuals who, serving as interns, assisted in the development of this Guide: Cara West, Veronica Lew, Kelly Willett and Cecilia Allen. The Committee thanks Pete Inman and Texas Casa for allowing us the inclusion of the article "Cultivating Corporate Relationships" from a previous issue of Heartbeat.

The Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities encourages the use of people first language.
