The Nacogdoches Mayor's Committee conducted a survey
of people with disabilities to identify needs in the areas
of housing, employment, and recreation. Survey results
indicated a primary need for affordable, accessible
recreation, particularly at Lake Nacogdoches. The
Nacogdoches Mayor's Committee partnered with the Texas
Association of Bass Clubs to build a barrier-free fishing
pier for people of all abilities.
The pier opened in September 1997. It is 100 feet long with a 50 foot "T" head and has 12 wheelchair stations. The partially covered, lighted pier also offers parking for people with disabilities adjacent to the entrance. With each and every opportunity to present information about PROJECT PIER, the Mayor's Committee has promoted the ADA and inclusion for people with disabilities. The message is strong our world should be barrier-free.
To replicate this innovative program, follow these key steps to build a pier:
- Partner with the Texas Association of Bass Clubs/(TABC) (local and state level) or develop other community partnerships.
- Obtain support from the authority over the designated lake.
- Mobilize a sub-committee to implement the project.
- Obtain barrier-free architectural plans from TABC or PROJECT FISH.
- Design a public relations plan, including a brochure, which includes community education about the ADA and inclusion of people with disabilities.
- Develop a relationship with the local media.
- Obtain bids from contractors and determine costs.
- Write grants, contact foundations, and plan fund-raisers.
