National Disabilities Employment Awareness Month Posters
Each October the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities produces a poster celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The posters feature artwork by a Texan with a disability.
The project began in 1999 because the Committee continued to receive requests for posters that were no longer produced by a federal disability office. People enjoy the posters and the messages conveyed. So, the Committee decided to produce posters to meet the need.
The Committee raises private funds and receives in-kind donations to produce colorful and beautiful 18 x 24 inch posters that now hang in businesses, government offices, schools and colleges. Since 2000, posters displayed on the Committee website allow visitors to request a free poster by e-mail.
Artwork ranges from a landscape of Texas bluebonnets to a photograph of Mount Everest and to the sketch of a tiger. A wide variety of media are used. Likewise, the artists featured have various disabilities including head injury, blindness, wheelchair user, cerebral palsy, mental health, cancer, hard of hearing, arthritis and paralysis. Some posters contain a picture and description of the artist.
For the last four years Apple Specialty Advertising has donated the design and layout for the NDEAM posters. “We believe the posters provide a worthwhile avenue for highlighting talented individuals with disabilities,” said Jane Thomas. A partner in the company Apple Specialty Advertising, Thomas uses a wheelchair and is breast cancer survivor.
The Committee mails posters to businesses, government offices, schools, local committees, disability organizations and also sends to groups according to the subject of the artwork such as zoos, shoe stores, cancer centers, outfitters, trekkers, cyclists, wildflower lovers, religious organizations, etc.
In addition to displaying artwork in places around the State, the posters are displayed alongside the original artwork at the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities office located at 1100 San Jacinto Blvd., Austin, Texas. The Committee hopes to feature both the artwork and the posters in a future art show at the State Capitol.
Beginning September 1 of every year, we will take orders for posters for your October NDEAM celebrations. Please email us at
