ADA Roundtable Events

The Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities, along with partners from the City of Austin and other state agencies, invite you to the ADA Roundtables. The ADA Roundtables are an effort to deliver free training programs about the Americans with Disabilities Act to state and local ADA Coordinators, HR personnel and to the public.  Each bi-monthly event consists of two 45 minute talks separated by a 30 minutes network and refreshment break. Topics are related to a wide range of disability issues in Texas.  Invitees include ADA Coordinators of city, county, state government, others who work with people with disabilities, and the general public.  Please distribute this announcement widely.

Long-term Planning for People with Disabilities: Public Benefits, Trusts, and Guardianships

This FREE online presentation will give caretakers the practical information they need to make long-term decisions with their loved-ones. Expert speakers will discuss a range of financial and legal tools for planning for a lifetime of support. Session topics include: government benefits (cash assistance and health care), supplemental needs trusts, myths and realities of guardianships, and guardianship procedures. ADA Amendments Act and Reasonable Accommodation Changes

Please join the Texas Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities and the Southwest ADA Center at ILRU for an ADA accessible Talking Communities Roundtable webinar on "The ADA Amendments Act and Reasonable Accommodation Changes" on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 2:00pm Central.

Peggy R. Mastroianni, Associate Legal Counsel for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and Brian East, Senior Attorney with Disability Rights Texas, will discuss recent changes to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the concept of reasonable accommodations.

Understanding Developmental Disabilities

Join us Tuesday, April 26, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Winters Building, 701 W. 51st Street, Public Hearing Room 125 C,E,W for this ADA Round Table Event.

The first session will feature representatives from Special Olympics Texas - Margaret Larsen, President and CEO; Suzanne Anderson, Vice-President of Field Services; Kelly Coffey, Vice-President of Communications; and an SOTX athlete. This session will include videos, a PowerPoint presentation, and handouts.

After a 30-minute break, the second session will begin with a talk by James Fowler, a young man with Down syndrome who is known for his public speaking skills. Afterward, a panel from the Texas Council on Developmental Disabilities (TCDD) will speak - Roger Webb, Executive Director; and John Morris, TCDD Member - offering an overview of TCDD, including their responsibilities, policy priorities, and a perspective on employment issues for people with developmental disabilities.
